Q) How are these aromatic oils manu-

factured? Tell us about the ingredients used.

Essential oils are extracted from aromatic

plants, for eg, rose oil, jasmine, geranium, tea

tree etc. Most essential oils are obtained by

distillation. The plant material is placed in a

container which is either boiled in water or

subjected to steam under pressure. The heat

causes the oil globules in the material to burst

open. It is then cooled and the vapour turn

back to liquid which is collected in a flask. The

oil essence floats on top of the condensed water

and is easily collected. The other methods of

obtaining essential oils is solvent extraction

enfleurage (which is one of the oldest methods)

and expression method.

Esters, aldehydes (aliphate), ketones,

sequiterpenes, lactones and cowmanins, oxides,
